The phantom bore down upon them with slow purpose. Its robes flapped in a wind that Goldson could not feel, and it stared into his soul with eyes he could not see. Nothing was visible in the endless night of that dark hood. Bells were playing somewhere in the fog to the tune of “A Song of Three Spirits,” and the voice of little Lance singing the words creeped into the old Dwarf’s mind.

The third ghost is what’s yet to be,

A silent shade unbending.

For the part of life no man can see

Is the bit after the ending.
